Dick Hedlund - Arches

29/10 - 28/11 Preview 26/9 4-7 pm

There you are, on the threshold, feeling it; sensing, selecting and perceiving. From light data to perception, a refined fire pouring out of the eye, consolidating with fire from other luminous bodies, bouncing back through delicately stratified meshes of various qualities, dense and sparse, tainting pirouettes and rhythmic patterns, before vision might be procreated. Always, yet especially right here, behind arched air, in front of Dick Hedlund’s fabrics.

My friend is anti-fascist, queer and an outdoor enthusiast. His prospects are laid bare, as is the focus between thread and fabric, between line and gap, between flat or deeply projected topologies expressed in vivid landscapes of raw material, being transformed through persistent practice and an unreasonable amount of stitches. When lifting the presser foot, he evokes a buoyant vessel running wild in gusts, like a textile glossolalia pouring out of a machine with a weather vane on its engine. The traces left behind are bioluminescent nautical charts, mapping an inner archipelago; an arena where a thousand cranes dance in a sea of black polyester.

It might seem appropriate that Dick Hedlund has been bending bows for a space called Elastic. Yet these kinds of playful coincidences happen all the time around artists who conspire with theaether and should not be paid much more attention than a wink of one's eye.

Here, one might find far more overarching narratives, weaving together personal memories with attention to the mythological and the most fundamental processes of making images. Entanglements in the darknesses of caves; a tenderness towards the survival of the group. Well worth a trip.
