ELASTIC are pleased to present the Norwegian artist Knut Henrik Henriksen´s first solo show in Sweden.

Henriksen's works are determined by the site in which they are executed and presented. The shape and the size of the exhibition space are defining the shape and the form of his sculptures.

Installlation view at Elastic, Yesterday_Insertion, Endless Column, Untitled (floor piece), 2006

The sculpture on the floor in the gallery follows the same logic as how we use standard formats (2xA4=A3...). Henriksen has maped the space by drawing all combinations of lines between all corners. Then a carpet with 25% of size and form as the gallery, is cut along the same lines. The pieces of the carpet is then spread out to fill the space, creating a dialogue with the spaces inbetween.

The work “Endless column” is a variation of Brancusis free standing sculpture. The work are made from 3 wooden pieces in the standard format A2, cut diagonal, and placed on top of each other. The sculpture is mounted in a way that makes it climb up one of the corners of the gallery.

The piece”Yesterday” dissects the gallery space. An A3 piece of the wall is cut out, making visible the structure behind the gallery walls. The piece is then divide in half into two A4 pieces, one of which then is divided up by nine diagonal cuts creating 10 piece glued back together to create a Brancsusi like freestanding arched object. The method behind the creation shows a potential of sculpture that is a tread behind Henriksen sculpture – if you continue cutting, the curved sculpture would rise to infinte.

The new object is presented in the office space of the gallery, on the other side of the wall. Therefore also the titel ”Yesterday” , a sculpture playing with time and memory, but also the recycling of a modernistic tradition of sculpture.

In the entrance of the gallery Henriksen is using all different lengths delivered of wooden paneling. All pieces is then cut in half and placed on opposite standing walls. The structure apperaring has a kind of mirror-effect, but is also defining the white walls and the negative shapes between the two walls.
