Maria Hedlunds arbeten utgår ofta från vad som tycks vara konkreta skildringar av föremål eller händelser hämtade ur vardagen. Vid närmare betraktande upptäcker man dock snart att de befinner sig långt från det referentiella i fotografiet som medium. Förskjutningar i, och själva uppbyggnaden av fotografiet i sig, skapar det oväntade - en immanens i bilden som sådan, där det ”språkliga” sätts ur spel och blicken fokuserar något annat.
I Hedlunds senaste utställning, The Whiteness of the Whale, utforskar berättelsens struktur olika tidsdimensioner i tre olika verk. Den rumsliga rörelsen, seendet och temporala förekomster blir viktiga i hur vi skapar en bild av det avporträtterade. På samma sätt som vi ständigt delar upp tiden i förgången tid, nutid och framtid, vävs betraktaren in i den tredelade berättelsen genom de temporala och rumsliga situationer som skapas i verken och i gallerirummet.

Hedlunds påbörjade intresse för fotografi i förhållande till film utvidgas i detta första större arbete. Med filmen som medium förenas tidsaspekten och betraktaren i ett vardagligt stilla möte med protagonisten, en vit belugaval som cirklar runt i sin tank.

I utställningen kastas ordningen om, och börjar där The Whiteness of the Whale-serien avslutas i det senaste verket, nämligen Del III som är en svit om 18 fotografier. Sviten blir bäraren av ett lineärt narrativ, som också för in betraktaren i tematiken. Det allra första fotografiet är en text om en erfarenhet och ett möte med något som till en början bara finns i tanken och inte går att se. Hedlunds förväntningar leder henne ihärdigt tillbaka till samma plats, styr henne mot ett återkommande sökande som av en tillfällighet blir ett självändamål.

Maria Hedlund's photographic works are often seemingly concrete representations of everyday objects or occurrences. However, when you take a closer look, you soon find that they are far from referential. Subtle shifts and displacements in the photographic structure create an unexpected quality in the picture - an immanence where the “linguistic” dimension is put out of action and where the gaze is free to focus on something else.
In Hedlund's exhibition, The Whiteness of the Whale, the story line explores different temporal dimensions in three different works. The spatial movement, the eye, and temporality are crucial factors in how we envisage that which is portrayed. Just as we divide time into past, present and future, the spectator is subsumed into three stories by means of the temporal and spatial encounters created by the interplay of the works and the gallery space.

Hedlund's exploration of the relation between photography and film is further expanded in this major new work. In this filmic piece the spectator is made to experience temporality in a peaceful encounter with the protagonist, a white beluga whale, circling round in a tank.

In the exhibition the order has been reversed. It starts with the conclusion of The Whiteness of the Whale, namely Part III, Hedlund's latest work, which is a series comprising 18 photographs. The series traces a linear narration, which introduces the theme to the spectator. The first image tells a story of an experience or an encounter with something that initially exists only in the mind and cannot be seen. Hedlund's expectations persistently return her to the same place, guiding her in an incessant search which, seemingly by chance, turns into a goal.
