Per Mårtensson Damage Control 2/10 - 8/11

Damage Control, 2/10-8/11 2014
Opening: 2/10 5-8pm

From hard-edged constructivism to catchy figurative oil painting, Per Mårtensson absorbs the different languages of painting in his work. A whiff of the mundane is always present in his paintings: elevator doors, smashed storefronts and windows, mirrors, floors. Found imagery and photographs of everyday surfaces, used with deadpan simplicity, are transformed into ambiguous, double-edged paintings.

Elastic Gallery is proud to present 'Damage Control', Per Mårtensson’s fifth solo show at the gallery, and his first in the Stockholm space. He continues to explore a type of multilingualism, where different surfaces as well as paintings, are seen as different languages that intertwine and alternate between each other.

One of the series on display consists of what looks like white canvases with seemingly random black lines. These are based on actual storefronts which have been smashed then mended, and on which the format and size of the canvas is then modeled after. The black lines are stylized bits of tape trying to hold together the destroyed window. But they are equally generated out of a measure for economical means, since every one of them references the size of the security guard called upon to mend the smashed storefront windows.

The exhibition title 'Damage Control' expands itself to measures taken to minimize damage to reputation, credibility, or public image caused by a divisive act. In a series involving brightly colorful canvases, Mårtensson has taken his method to the next level. The colors go from one to the next with a shimmer that mimics a glass surface.

These paintings are modeled after visors commonly used as protection from the sun, but also as a hideaway from nosy spectators. The inspiration comes from paparazzi images of semi-celebrities trying to hide their faces from an ocean of flashing cameras.

The end result is a series of paintings that look like a deranged form of constructivism but that are always rooted in reality.
